| A decade ago, I very much enjoyed Sean O'Casey's Juno and the Paycock with Ciaran O’Reilly at Irish Rep. I had hopes that the current Druid production of The Plough and the Stars at NYU Skirball Center would be equally rewarding. It wasn't. Much like the Australian production of Summer of the Seventeenth Doll many decades ago, it was completely unintelligible to people who spoke only standard US English. |

| Sad to say, I had a similar experience. I saw Juno last night after seeing it at the Irish Rep previously, and I was not able to understand what was being said at least 50 percent of the time. My friend was in the same boat, and she is a very experienced theatergoer. I don’t know if the sound design contributed in some way or not. I found it very frustrating and disappointing. | |

| Surely you can’t make such a generalisation. Are you certain that other members of the audience didn’t understand it? I wish some Americans would try harder to understand dialogue delivered in other accents. It takes active listening and a bit of work. | |

| Just so we are all clear...because they did not adapt their native language to your ear, you are dismissing this extraordinary trio of plays so perfectly realized? I can understand if you were frustrated they didn't add supertitles or some other translating tool, making that the point of your post. | |

| There really is no reason why any play should be unintelligible because of accents or poor sound design. Most Americans would not know the difference between a completely accurate accent or not so I believe that actors it should give it a hint of an accent up until the point that most people can't understand it.. I hate singers, who don't annunciate, and I hate poor sound design like in the musical waitress which many hear complained about it, but nothing was done about. | |
