| This is an interesting case. Deborah S. Proctor who wrote the letter criticizing one of the operas as featuring a "non-biblical depiction" of Mary (whatever that means) has an admirable long-term record of service to the local classical radio station. I wonder if this was her decision and/or whether she misread how purple her region has become. | |

| The letter she sent (linked in the Times article) makes it clear that she's expressing a personal attitude. The interview she gave to NPR is also instructive in that regard. To her the station is meant to be "relaxing" and "a refuge." (The updated article contains the original interview.) Now she's not the one facing the press. | |

| Yes, oh my goodness: In the NPR interview, Proctor called WCPE's programming "a safe refuge from the horrors of life." Repeatedly, Proctor also appealed to the sensibilities of any children who might tune into her station or come across it online and said that her personal values were integral to her decision-making. Breaking into tears on the phone, Proctor said: "I have a moral decision to make here. What if one child hears this? When I stand before Jesus Christ on Judgement Day, what am I going to say?" I suppose we all have different ideas of the horrors of life! |

| Kids have the entire Internet at their fingertips... but sure, stumbling across an opera on the radio is cause for concern. Smh. | |

| On a side issue: considering that when the NY City Opera was around, it used to use sur-titles for many contemporary operas in English, and that the Met uses titles in the seat in front of you as well, the diction issues for opera singers (especially high sopranos, where vowel modifications take precedence to get out the high notes) might make it hard to tell what the hell they are singing over the radio anyway. They could be singing about someone named Murry instead of Mary, for instance. Without titles, who's necessarily to know? Opera in foreign languages over the radio, non-speakers usually can't tell without titles. They do usually offer synopses of what happens in each act traditionally. But glad that the radio station has reinstated these broadcasts. NY City Opera (even though someone still uses that basically defunct company name for performances here and there) and other small companies have gone out of business, so any opportunity to keep opera going is appreciated. | |
