| On a side issue: considering that when the NY City Opera was around, it used to use sur-titles for many contemporary operas in English, and that the Met uses titles in the seat in front of you as well, the diction issues for opera singers (especially high sopranos, where vowel modifications take precedence to get out the high notes) might make it hard to tell what the hell they are singing over the radio anyway. They could be singing about someone named Murry instead of Mary, for instance. Without titles, who's necessarily to know? Opera in foreign languages over the radio, non-speakers usually can't tell without titles. They do usually offer synopses of what happens in each act traditionally. But glad that the radio station has reinstated these broadcasts. NY City Opera (even though someone still uses that basically defunct company name for performances here and there) and other small companies have gone out of business, so any opportunity to keep opera going is appreciated. |
