Cariou is left-handed. And then when Hearn replaced him, he thought they wanted Sweeney to be left-handed, so he made himself favor his left hand.

George Hearn is also left-handed.

While an editor's note in an article in The Sondheim Review said that Hearn is left-handed, my memory is that when Hearn told the story himself, which I think was at the time of the 2000 New York Philharmonic concerts, he said that he was right-handed but thought they wanted a left-handed Sweeney. My memory could be wrong. Do you have Hearn telling the story himself? Or are you just sure he's left-handed? EDIT: And I know that Sondheim in Finishing the Hat says that Hearn is left-handed. I believe he was misremembering, as he did with so many things in his two books. But, of course, I could be misremembering.

Linked below is where I read that Sondheim said that Hearn is left-handed. I think you may be right that Sondheim simply misremembered.

Also, now that I think about it I seem to recall Hearn in an interview somewhere talking about being right-handed and he humorously recalled that during rehearsals he asked Prince if he could use his right arm and Prince responded with a one-word answer that offered no further explanation, "No".

In the Prince staging at the moment Sweeney utters that line he begins to exit stage-right so he's holding the razor up high with his downstage arm. I remember the stage going dark and the followspots tightly focusing on the razor and the razor sparkled and glistened like a mirror ball throughout the house. (On the Lansbury/Hearn video the moment is mostly lost because the lighting had been adjusted to much brighter levels for the taping in order to compensate for the then less sophisticated cameras that had trouble with low lighting.)
Link “Len Cariou was left-handed, as was George Hearn, his replacement, so I had to cut the ‘right’” in the line “My right arm is complete again!”

I suppose "At last, my downstage arm is complete again" just wouldn't have have sounded as good...;-)

that's interesting. So the actual lyric should be "right arm." Is that what is used in other productions? The movie? Do you know? Thanks in advance.

It's not a lyric. It's a line. In the Christopher Bond source play, the line is "My right hand is complete again." No "At last." Similarly, the published script has "My right arm is complete again." No "At last."

I don't remember what it is in the movie, but offhand at least, I don't recall "right" being there.

Many productions stick with what was said in the original production, but I have seen at least a couple that included "right."

Oddly enough - I have copies of the old printed PC Score and the MTI published full score and while PC score does not have "at last", the full score does include it (and they both include "right arm".). I think the best we can determine is there has been a lot of inconsistency probably some simply due to the handedness of actors!

A correction, though - the "old printed" score is not a PC, it's a piano-vocal based on Sondheim's (pre-orchestration) piano part. THAT one was/is published. The full score was not published, maybe you meant to say printed?

The new MTI PC score (not published) has the complete line, and the old manuscript version of the PC score has "at last" but not "right."

The other thing to say, of course, is that scores (as opposed to scripts) are not usually the best source for accurate dialogue lines. Sometimes lines are only hinted at or abbreviated. Or plain wrong. ;-)

In the printed vocal score, the line is “My right arm is complete again!”

in the movie it is "At last, my arm is complete again."

it's at the 4:38 mark. Sorry I didn't cue it up.

On page 340 of "Finishing the Hat," the lyric is "My right arm is complete again." There is a footnote explaining that both Len Cariou and George Hearn were left-handed.

I remember reading that a while ago.
