| For some reason I was thinking about the film version of Cole Porter's KISS ME KATE this afternoon. Was it a hit film at the time? With all it's stars, great music, great choreography and amazing entertainment value, it seems that it would've been. | |

| Both of these films were shot in 3D -- MGMs only 3D musical and Hitchcock's only foray into 3D. They were shot toward the end of the 3D craze and theaters had the option to screen in 2D or 3D. My understanding is that Dial M was mostly screened in 2D and, while the 3D version of Kate outgrossed its 2D version, Radio City Music Hall opted for flat. I've seen Kate in 3D several times and I've always thought, if you saw this in 2D you would wonder if the director had some subliminal violent streak as you have musical numbers ending with players throwing things at the camera or kicking a leg in your face! I'm a fan of both these films, expecially in 3D (although Murder really only has one scene where 3D is remotely justified). | |

| I always thought the first scene of the film, with Porter walking around the apartment, to be laughable. But then I learned that Porter did have a limited ability to walk. So maybe not quite as ridiculous. But it still feels like MGM was trying to gloss over the real-life Porter. But, at least no turtles/conductors on speed, or chucking out too much of the composer's score (On The Town, On Your Toes, etc), or other whims that the studios foisted on stage musicals over time. Some changes of course (including that whole opening scene), but more or less the essence and spirit of the Broadway show is intact. And very well-performed. And the one song addition, "From This Moment On," fits beautifully and is fun to hear and watch - unlike the attempt to put it into the 1999 revival, where it just unnecessarily added running time to the show. |
