Fantasy studio recordings

If you could chose an older show to have a full modern, note complete recording what would it be? I would love a new recording of Rodgers & Harts "By Jupiter" with original orchestration (I have the 1967 revival). On CD of course. What would others wish for?

While the Grand Hotel recording was famously tortured in terms of the amount of time it took to get all the rights in order, and the tragic loss of David Carroll by the time they finally got into the studio, is it incomplete? I have seen several productions and know the recording quite well and can't think of anything significant that is missing.

Yes, the Grand Hotel album is distinctly incomplete--aside from lots of incidental music and underscoring, it's missing "The Boston Merger", "No Encore", and, most oddly, Grushinskaya's portion of "Love Can't Happen".

The Actors Fund concert of Dreamgirls (I'm pretty sure) captures the entire score with pretty luxury casting!

But oh how glorious it would be to have a complete recording with the original cast! I understand what they were going for with the OBCR, but wow what a misrepresentation of the riches the score has to offer.

Of course!

But also that's not what studio recordings are. It's rare if ever that a studio album is made with the original cast, and when it has been it's because that OBC never got an album, and usually only some of the original cast can do it. Right?

Even if a studio recording was done with the original Dreamgirls cast (I haven't checked if all the main players are still with us, but most are at least, no?), it would still be quite different than it was, beyond their performance as actors in the roles (even if they rehearsed it for a week with a good director) the director isn't Bennett, their approaches to the roles would be possibly quite different even without knowing it, and their vocals would of course not be the same... this was 41 years ago.

I think EvFoDr was talking in the past tense. As in "how glorious it would [have been] to have a complete recording with the original cast!"

Although, a studio recording with the original cast in 2023 would be high camp and I would demand a full documentary of the process!

The last release of the original cast of Nine is note-complete, I believe (missing some small transitions, perhaps - it's been a while since I listened to it).

Are you speaking of the London concert recording?

No, the original Broadway cast. It's a 2-cd set that also includes some fun bonus tracks of Yeston performing. It came out a while ago but I assume it's still in print?

The original recording was essentially a run of the show without audience (different than most cast recordings that record numbers out of sequence) - that's what Yeston wanted. So all of the material was recorded, but then truncated for release. The 2 CD set is the only truly complete version of that.

The London concert recording is also a double cd (which was also released as a truncated single cd version too), I don't know if it's complete-complete, but it's pretty impressive, and I love it as much (sometimes more) than the OBC recording.
