Other than NYC and London, what other cities have a concentration of theaters showing original works?

Moscow has something like twenty theaters more or less concentrated in the Tsverkoy District. For ballet and opera Petersburg was and probably still is the town to be in but Moscow is the theater town. I’ve never been and have always wanted to go but probably never will in this lifetime.

In North America, the biggest would be Toronto.

In the UK, you'll find theatres showing original works in a lot of cities; depending on whether you count fringe festivals, the city with the most would probably be either Edinburgh or Manchester.

Europe: the biggest is probably Paris - but you'll find new writing pretty much everywhere where there's a theatre scene. There's certainly a lot going on in Germany, but Germany's history means that Berlin doesn't have quite the same gravitational pull as London or Paris or New York or Toronto.

Steppenwolf, Goodman, Chicago Shakespeare, and others (particularly Victory Gardens) have in the past introduced new works on their various stages. Also, Raven Theatre and even Northwestern University's theatre operation have done the same. In addition, Timeline Theatre occasionally.

Not a district with theaters clustered together.

Well, here's a different example: Raven Theatre, Rivendell Theatre, and Lifeline Theatre. All 3 are in the Rogers Park area of Chicago within a radius of 10 blocks of each other, sort of in a cluster. All 3, on occasion anyway, have presented new works on their stages.

I didn't take the poster literally - I thought they were looking for a regional theatre area that did a lot of new works.

I took it the same way. I mean, on the more limited geographic basis, even New York City fails. Is Chelsea in the same district as HK, or the West Village, or the East Village? To me, the answer is we have a "district" encompassing 3+ boroughs and 2+ states. I don't not go to BAM because it is not in some district. Same seems true in Chicago, SF, LA, Toronto, London, DC, and quite a few others I can think of.

What do you consider a concentration—5 or more?

Not many have that in a few block area. San Fran does have union square area with Curran, Geary, sf playhouse and a few small theaters that don’t do much new works. magic is in a different part of the city. Berkeley rep and theater works are outside the city.

But it is in civic center and not union square.

There are others, but Minneapolis/St. Paul has a very large number of world premiere productions. Lots.
