I recently had a good experience at the DoubleTree West End. It's outside of the Covent Garden/Leicester Square area...but easily walkable to those areas. It's sometimes nice to be away from that craziness too.
Rooms are small, but most hotel rooms are small in London. But rooms are nicely renovated.
The hotel is close to the British Museum, near the Holborn tube stop, which is along the Picadilly Line with easy access to Covent Garden, Leicester Square and Picadilly Circus if you don't want to walk.
Breakfast buffet there was decent too.
