| Mark Goodard did hundreds of TV shows, but to me, he'll always be Major Don West from ''Lost in Space,'' the kinda campy sci-fi series of the 1960s (which was set in 1997!). When I Googled him, I was surprised to learn that he made his Broadway debut opposite Liza Minnelli in ''The Act'' (1977). Anyone remember the show or his role of Charley Price? I've never seen ''The Act,'' but I knew Minnelli won the Tony for it, apparently for practically singing all its Kander and Ebb songs, including the ebullient ''City Lights.'' In a 1997 video interview, Goddard recalled: ''I loved it. That was one of my greatest experiences: [working] with Liza Minnelli. It was directed by Martin Scorsese.'' |

| The Act was a terrific showcase for LM, with a good Kander and Ebb score. But that was about it. The book was flimsy, and both Mark Goddard and Barry Nelson as the men in LM's character's life had very little to play. Nothing like full-fledged characters. But the show was entertaining and the book contains the first time I heard an old joke about NYC--something like "NY would be a great city if they ever finish it." | |
