HERE WE ARE Tonight (Possible Spoiler)

“The piano is dead. Rest in peace.” This pronouncement occurs a few minutes into Act Two of HERE WE ARE—sadly, a disappointment—and it feels as if we’re being told “that’s all (s)he wrote.” After this, the absence of music, apart from some underscoring, whether intentional or not, doesn’t work. The first Act has wit and buoyancy. It’s not top tier Sondheim, but it’s a pleasure to hear him sounding like himself again. His—and Ives’—contributions make Bunuel’s blunt bourgeois satire lighter and, to my mind, less banal. But Act Two is another story. Devoid of Sondheim’s lyric invention and his shrewd humor, Ives adapts Bunuel’s story but can’t transform it. And so there's a tonal shift that’s largely unconvincing. Wicked mockery devolves into ponderousness and ultimately (fourth wall breaking) sentimentality which I expect would really annoy Bunuel. In all, HERE WE ARE is a schizoid affair, neatly performed and directed, but not nearly entire. Sometimes people leave you halfway through the wood.
