Murray’s father was Dennis Murray, who had been a choreographer, stage manager, and director for many shows, including the Ziegfeld Follies, where he met Ethel Cook, one of the show girls. They married, and Don was their second child.
Land of weird coincidences: Don met Hope Lange, whom he would marry after a five year courtship, when on a double date. Hope was the other guy’s date. Her father, John Lange, was a cellist and music arranger for Ziegfeld, and he and Don’s father, Dennis, knew each other back in the twenties.
