I'd never heard of Escola until the pandemic and I really got into all the stuff that is on YouTube during the many months of confinement. I like your description of him as Pee-wee Herman crossed with Nellie Olsen. Malevolence is never far from the surface and I wouldn't want to turn my back on him. He's kind of a Puck come to life.

He's already had plenty of exposure in TV but he still seems to be drawn to live performance. I thought the best parts of OH, MARY! were the moments that seemed improvised. He has an incredible mind and a seemingly inexhaustible catalogue of pop culture tropes spanning centuries and it is so much fun to watch him spin them out. (The pull quote on the poster alone made me laugh: "The Greatest Play of the Generation". I can only imagine he once saw a poster that had those exact words. Maybe even OUR AMERICAN COUSIN? I looked it up but didn't see anything.)

I also really liked James Scully as the young acting coach. He's eye candy, of course, but quite deft in his delineation of the other layers of the character.

I heard someone mumbling that it might have Broadway in its sights. It seems a rather Downtown thing to make it north of 14th Street, but if it develops a rabid fan base, who knows?

I hope Cole might have more revisionist history plays in his mind.
