If each song sounds completely different in a musical, it's usually not a great musical. Motifs, orchestrations, voicing, etc. serve to unite a piece. Even something like the SPONGEBOB musical -- most songs written by different authors -- the construction of those songs by Tom Kitt brought a sense of unity to the proceeding.
