I have full confidence that Billie Eilish hasn't even begun to show us all she's capable of as a writer. The fact that she writes THIS WELL, at this age, only gives me more optimism.

Songs like "Xanny" -- from her first album -- draw so clearly from classic American popular music. I wasn't shocked at all when I learned that she grew up listening to American classic songwriters like Cole Porter and singing with the Los Angeles Children's Chorus.

One could easily argue that her brother Phinneas's production is why her songs & sound broke into the mainstream, but if you stripped them down and placed her voice above a simple piano, you'd be able to tell right away that her songs have incredibly good structure.

She's a smart artist. She wouldn't pen a Broadway score without making sure to surprise the ear. I'd be thrilled.
