That's a subjective call. Wikipedia lists 19 EGOT winners: recipients of the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony in competitive categories. Wikipedia includes Belafonte as one of the 6 non-competitive EGOT winners because his Oscar is a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. This puts Belafonte in the same category as Barbra Streisand, who has a special Tony Award, but not a competitive one. To me, a real EGOT winner is someone who wins a competitive Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony, preferably for 4 different projects, demonstrating one's versatility or mastery of the various media. As time has gone by, though, I believe the EGOT has become less special because the standards of the various awards have diminished. For instance, it seems like a number of celebrities practically have ''bought'' a Tony as a producer of a Broadway show. |
