I saw Doubt this afternoon. Amy Ryan is amazing - she seemed to have a complete mastery of the role. How did she do that so quickly?
My comment on the play has a major SPOILER so stop now if you don't want to know the ending.
In the play, is the priest guilty of sexually abusing a child? I saw this play 20 years ago, which was before the extent of the sexual scandal in the Catholic Church was known, although some reporting had been done. Therefore, my feeling 20 years ago was that the answer was deliberately left ambiguous by Shanley - hence the title. But with everything we've learned in the last 20 years, it seemed hard for me to assume that the priest could be innocent. I don't believe that the play has been changed at all, but nevertheless I think any reaction to a play is colored by the world you live in when you see it.
