I was a senior in high school, and DRACULA was my first Broadway show. October 1977, last week of previews, two or three nights before it opened. It was fantastic! Langella was riveting, but the entire cast was working at a high level. I think it was wise to keep Dracula offstage for much of the show -- because when he did appear, his impact was substantial.

Each time the curtain went up on a new set, the audience would applaud. (They were THAT great.) As others have remarked, each set was like a black & white movie, except for one little splash of red. Oh, and at the top of the final scene, in Dracula's crypt, a rat scuttled across the stage, and then stopped when it was caught by the beam of a flashlight -- then dashed away. The rat got applause, too.

Unfortunately, I lost my playbill from that night. But I do have the book of the set designs mentioned above, as well as a framed poster from the show. That production stands as one of my 2 or 3 best-ever theater experiences.
