I'm always amazed at how little this musical relates to actual history. I mean, all musicals based on real life people do this to an extent (Hello, FUNNY GIRL and ANNIE GET YOUR GUN), but MACK AND MABEL bears almost no resemblance to real life at all. It's almost as if the original creators fell in love with the snappy title and then realized that the actual story of these two people didn't interest them enough to actually put on the stage. I mean, there were actual people named Mack Sennett and Mabel Normand and William Desmond Taylor, but that's about all that's actually true to history in the narrative.

Some versions include a character that turns out to be Frank Capra, but I don't think the real life Capra had anything to do with Mack or Mabel or their story.
