| I don't think it's about having a better CHANCE of winning a Tony so much as KNOWING whether or not you're GOING to win a Tony. With a show that opens in December that doesn't do well early, you have to risk losing money for months before finding out whether or not you're going to win the Tony and get that bump. If you open in April, don't do well, and fail to win the Tony in June, you can close sooner and don't lose as much money as the show that opened in December. And then there are shows like HERE LIES LOVE and HARMONY. They decided they couldn't afford to keep the show open until June. So they close without ever knowing if a Tony could've helped. If those shows were opening next month, they'd at least be in the game and could close immediately after the awards are given out if things aren't going well. | |
