I think a good many people might also have friends or relatives whose judgment they might trust when inquiring about musicals playing in town; those "in the know" might have tipped them off that "Mack and Mabel" has a really terrific score, even though its book has always been problematic. But when done right, the show can still give lots of pleasure.
