I think it’s one of Streep’s finest, smartest portraits. I missed the intelligent slant Adriane Lenox brought to the mother. Her ability to move beyond any prejudice against the priest was astonidhing and real. Viola Davis did a lot of weeping in the same role, so I was less engaged.
I loved Streep with Phillip Seymour Hoffman in the Delacorte’s SEAGULL. She’s all silvery wit, and he’s all feeling. A great balance. |
