I seem to remember reading that a lot of newspapers had outsourced their editing to foreign lands much like call centres had done. They were staffed by people whose first language was not English and- despite their extraordinarily strong English language abilities- also had several understandable gaps in their acumen. The same could be true of editors of a certain age (i.e. young) whose knowledge of a myriad of cultural and historic references would be less complete than someone older. (Much like my middle-aged frame of reference is less complete than an 80- or 90-year old's.)
