Thanks for letting me know my post wasn't totally off-base. (ryhog and I seem to rankle at each other's posts more than we probably should).
I actually don't know anything about the puzzles you're talking about! I will look into them, even if they are not available anymore.
I haven't been a regular New Yorker reader for awhile but it's shocking to hear that they are slipping, too. Being a New Yorker fact checker was always one of those elite professions like brain surgeon and astronaut.
