I was against seeing this production since I consider Gregory Hines performance in the original (which I saw three times) to be one of the five best stage performances I'd ever seen and couldn't imagine how it could be equaled let alone topped. But all these positive reviews has convinced me to give it a try -- especially at a TDF price.

For the record (if anyone cares) the other four stage performances that I consider the best ever are: Reba McIntire in Annie Get Your Gun; Hugh Jackman in Boy From Oz; Angela Lansbury in Gypsy; John McMartin in Great God Brown.

Kelli O'Hara's performance in Days of Wine and Roses might edge out one of those others. I'm taking another look on Tuesday to confirm it. But it's a pretty astonishing performance. O'Hara, always lovely and reliable, shows a depth and range here that I didn't think she was capable of. And the always sturdy (and under-appreciated) Brian D'Arcy James compliments O'Hara and really lets her performance shine through. If you miss this, you'll be sorry.
