I also think that people are more likely to post when they see something that they feel strongly about, particularly if they fell in love with a show or a performance. I think when people here are really taken by something, they often want to post about it and let the rest of us know so we can go see it, too.

There's also a higher likelihood of posting if you hate something, although if you dislike something that isn't supposed to be all that good, anyway, it may not spur one to post. If I see the Huey Lewis jukebox musical and think it is bad, I don't know that I need to tell others about it because no one is expecting it to be Great Art.

I think the stuff in between is the stuff that doesn't get commented on. If a show is in the range from "good but not great" to "that could have been better but it wasn't horrendous," I don't know if that level of reaction excites people enough to go through the trouble of posting about it. Based on comments elsewhere, I'm guessing that Water for Elephants falls into that broad grouping -- it's not a complete waste of time, but it's not all that special, either.

For whatever reason, it feels like there's been a lot of "good but not great," particularly on Broadway. Merrily has caused a lot of reaction, and to some extent Days of Wine and Roses, and I think Appropriate and Purlie Victorious were pleasant surprises for many, but otherwise, this Broadway season hasn't generated much enthusiasm.

Ann mentioned that other places on the Internet may be perceived as being friendlier. Ann or others, which theater websites are thought to be friendlier? BroadwayWorld can be much more anatagonistic, in my opinion.
