Seems like a major overreaction on the part of the theater staff. Yes, he probably shouldn't take five extras, but the Playbills are given to the theater for free and the show is not selling well enough that they have to worry about running out. Meanwhile, other audience members are talking on the phone and taking pictures, and many ushers/security guards feel there's a limit to how much they can intervene. There is no excuse for the usher to touch a patron by slapping them, and to have the security guard come later is ridiculous.

I would be shocked if the Shubert Organization is okay with an usher slapping a patron on the hand when the usher was in no physical danger. I imagine that usher, if identifiable, is going to be severely disciplined for doing that. The Shubert Organization probably isn't happy about the whole thing. They seem fairly customer-service-oriented, and your friend was left with a bad taste in his mouth for a pretty minor issue. Some patrons wouldn't come back after that. Not to mention the potential for a social media brouhaha. I really doubt that anyone was following protocol here.
