Hi, I live in the theatre district for 40 years. Do not take an Uber, it will slow you down and cost a fortune during congested times.

I have often gone to and from JFK (Terminal 1) using the MTA subway E train to SUTPHIN Boulevard in QUEENS and the JAMAICA Air Train. Usually the trip is under 40 minutes (once, I made the trip in 25 minutes!). (I put those stations in CAPS because I do not suggest using the Air Train option to Howard Beach Brooklyn, it is a much, much longer trip.)

For an arrival at JFK (I think you may arrive Terminal 8), take the Air Train shuttle to JAMAICA. I think it is three quick stops, ask the many station attendants to be sure you're on the right shuttle. Before you exit the Air Train you are going to have to buy an MTA subway pass to you can pay the $8.50 for the Air Train and then the subway. There will be lines of confused tourists realizing they have to queue for the vending machines so keep your eye out as soon as you get off the shuttle for the shortest line. Remember to load enough money on your card so you have enough funds on it for the return Air Train, or you'll end up in the lines again when you leave. From Arizona, you might investigate online if you can upload the MTA's new phone app OMNY, which is a phone app you place against the turnstiles to let you pass. You might be able to load that up in Arizona and that will save you easily five minutes or so.

Once you get through the Air Train turnstiles its a quick walk to the subway - go down the escalators, follow the signs for the E Train at Sutphin Boulevard, you'll be passing by many Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) platforms. At the opposite end of the LIRR corridor you'll find the ramp leading to the E Train. Ignore all the homeless people holding the subway entrance doors open for you in exchange for a tip. Even if the door is open use the turnstile and swipe your card, there are lots of officers at this station waiting to write easy summons for unwary tourists who don't swipe their cards.

Take the E Train to Manhattan, and if you sit in the rear cars on the train, your exit will be easier. The express E Train will stop in the theatre district at 50th Street and 8th Avenue, exit to the rear where there is the escalator, otherwise its a long climb out. The E train then stops at 42nd Street. Again, if you exit to the rear you'll come our at 44th Street and 8th Avenue to the blaze of Broadway lights. At 42nd Street you can also exit out at 42nd Street and 40th Street (front of the car) if you are going to theatres in that direction.
