DEAD OUTLAW

Has no one else seen this yet? It's a genuine work of theatrical genius from the team that created "The Band's Visit"--David Yazbek, Itamar Moses and David Cromer--plus a brilliant new collaborator, Erik Della Pena. When so many new musicals are just diminished versions of properties we loved in another form, this one comes along to remind us that creativity sometimes derives from the most unlikely sources. It reminded me, oddly, of "Mahagonny" for its sheer audacity in finding a new purpose for musical theater. It feels wonderful to stand up for an ovation, not in a perfunctory way but because one was so moved.
