Weirdly, my first experience with the play was in its Spanish translation, with a cast of six (not three):

It was a particularly vibrant, almost vaudevillian production with a lot music and clowning, almost a circus (one that, of course, goes terribly, terribly wrong).

So I was very surprised to subsequently catch the London production, which couldn't have been more different in its staging and casting, but which was (obviously) extremely effective. I've been meaning to read the text to see if the number of actors is 'set' or whether it could be expanded even past six. I think a case can be made for both choices.
