I wasn't expecting much from this themed series from Carnegie Hall but I have to say that I was impressed by the one orchestral performance I saw in it. They looked into Weimar music in a refreshing way by trying to let it speak for itself. I agree that the Weimar era gets banalized by Kander & Ebbisms. It certainly got "decadent" economically and with approaching fascism in the '30's. But for most of its spanse it was about innovation and progress, a hopeful moment in German history. |
