The Komische Oper produced Fiddler on the Roof under its frequent German title Anatevka, directed by the great Walter Felsenstein, in 1970. It was a huge success for them, giving more than 500 performances over a number of years.

The Vienna Volksoper first did a musical in 1955: Kiss Me, Kate.

I have mixed feelings about opera companies doing musicals, unless they bring in people who primarily do musicals. But I suppose it depends on the show. And I suppose it depends on the country to some degree. When Lyric Opera of Chicago has done musicals, they've generally brought in theatre people, and done them separately from the main season. City Opera used to do that sometimes, too.

Too many of the U.S. opera houses are really too big for musicals. European houses do tend to be smaller.

It is nice to hear a big orchestra in the pit, although I think above 40 or so tends to be too much for musicals. I suppose it's true that we are not likely to have another Broadway production of Sweeney with the original complement of 26 players in the pit any time soon so I guess we must look to opera companies for that.

I suppose it's possible that the Met may even do musicals now that James Levine is gone. I think it was known that he was adamantly opposed to even works like Sweeney Todd and The Most Happy Fella. But that theatre is really too big.
