| Definitely, and as has been discussed here Dr. Stockmann in the original is a fan of eugenics as were, alarmingly, W. E. B. Du Bois and Margaret Sanger and many other progressive Americans. I used to bookend this play with Ibsen's other idealist hero/destroyers like Brand and Gregers Werle in "The Wild Duck" because I had read it somewhere and it matched my experiencing of reading the plays. But with this production I saw something very different in the play which I think has also been written about (see below) and that is the way a mob can become a carnival of trollish behavior. And how each person in the mob encourages and aids the other to unleash their inner troll. And it's fun, it's a holiday from the burden of treating your neighbor as you would yourself. It could be a "woke" mob or it could be a MAGA mob. The process is similar. That is not to say that I think a fascist mob is the same as a progressive mob. They act very differently but there are real similarities in the way group-think and action are generated, encouraged and normalized. |
