It was a star-studded event held at the Public’s Anspacher Theater, as Simon had such a special connection to the institution. Zoe Caldwell dazzled as the mistress of ceremonies. The inimitable Sylvia Miles read selections from his reviews. Michael Moriarty, Edward Albee and Al Pacino, paid tribute through witty anecdotes. The finale was Mandy Patinkin and Liza Minnelli’s duet of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.”

There was a tie vote by the Broadway League members, thus denying him the honor of a Broadway lights dimming; prospective candidates must receive a simple majority.
