Arden's a multitalented guy, and now I imagine he's even more in demand as a director, after winning his Tony for ''Parade.''

But I must admit I miss seeing Arden, the performer, whom I caught in ''Bare,'' ''The Times They Are A-Changin''' and ''The Hunchback of Notre Dame.''

And I miss Arden, the songwriter, who wrote ''Easter Rising'' and was working on a musical of ''The Talented Mr. Ripley'' (but couldn't get the rights).

My favorite Arden song is ''N and R,'' a delightful duet for two young men who see each other across a crowded subway platform.
