I will disagree. Especially with a musical (although not only with musicals), the writers almost always work very closely with the director. The director often suggests changes. The authors make changes that aren't necessarily demanded by the director once they see how things work in rehearsal or in previews (or, occasionally, after the opening, although this is less common than it used to be). The authors give input to the director, requesting certain interpretations and changes. The authors are there to say what they like, wht they would like to see, what they don't like, what they think is wrong, etc. They sometimes coach the actors. With musicals, the composer and lyricist particularly often do coach the actors on the interpretation of the songs.

Occasionally, authors may still end up unhappy with choices made on an original production, but an original production, for these reasons, is not just like any other production. It's not be the only valid way to do a show, but there certainly can be directorial concepts for any show that are not valid. I strongly disagree with the absolute statement "The directorial concepts that were used in the original or any other production are no more or less valid than any other directorial choice as to how to best express what the authors put on the page."
