Oh, I completely agree that the overture was not "written," but compiled, as might be expected of a temporary overture, meant to be replaced by something more inventive by opening night. As Bernstein wrote to Felicia, he was up all night putting together an "overture of sorts." In this case, it seems, they never got around to replacing it with something not so makeshift. Presuming that the overture that we know was played, if no other time, during the return engagement and then included, at least sometimes, as an option with the licensed materials, is the overture Bernstein put together, presumably with Kostal and Ramin, that night in D.C. That's a complicated sentence that I'm not sure makes sense, but I gotta go someplace, and I'm already late.
