3 Shows in 2 Days: PATRIOTS; PHILADELPHIA; STEREOPHONIC (Slight Spoilers)

Tues. evening, 4/2: Patriots -- Riveting tale about the oligarchs and Putin during the Yeltsin years and afterward. Stuhlbarg is dynamic and Keen appropriately stoic, but menacing. Events unfold at breathtaking speed in act one. Act two is slower, more downbeat. But hey, that's history.

Wed. afternoon, 4/3: Philadelphia, Here I Come! -- Heartbreaking revival of great Friel play, superbly acted by Charlotte Moore's incredible ensemble. Private Gar tells his public counterpart (and the audience) all the things he needs to say and do to make his life what it should be. But, will Public Gar heed, say, and do them? A.J. Shively is amazing. The best play (drama or musical) I've seen in New York this season.

Wed. evening, 4/3: Stereophonic -- Fascinating chronicling of a rock band's creation of a new recording. Clashes of ego, sex, drug use, great music, and the inevitable compromise. Slowly, at times glacially paced, but ultimately rewarding.
