Extremely late query about KIMBERLY AKIMBO

So happy that I finally got to Kimberly Akimbo last night (TDF, row D center orchestra). From the Playbill bios, it seems like some of the original Atlantic Theater Company returned for the conclusion of the run. We had two understudies, for Aaron & Teresa who were adorable.
My question is about Fernell Hogan who plays Martin. Forgive me if this has been discussed before, but I've never seen someone sing like he did. He barely opened his mouth, it almost seemed like he was whispering in all the ensemble moments. I started to wonder if he was a ventriloquist. His one solo moment he did open his mouth a bit wider when he sang, but it was just so unusual.
