60th anniversary of the opening of ANYONE CAN WHISTLE...

Wish I had remembered that yesterday, not today, was when I was at the Majestic Theatre 60 years ago. A friend and I had bought tickets for the opening night, which was supposed to be on Wednesday, April 1, but was pushed to the 4th, a Saturday, and as all you Sondheim fans know, it closed the following Saturday after nine performances. We wanted to see Lee Remick and Angela Lansbury and knew the music was by Sondheim, though we went more for the stars. We were up in the balcony (now rear mezzanine), which wasn't sold out, but what a thrill for two college kids to hear Lee singing so beautifully and Angela doing some fantastic high kicks. The plot was a bit baffling, but the choreography was terrific and Sondheim's score quite wonderful. How many shows with such a short run have had so many recordings and become legendary?

A surprise to us was the Playbill not having a picture of the stars or the logo for the show but a generic photo of what looked like car lights. The next day I had to get back to Providence and must have been on an Easter break. Saw so many incredible shows that year, the most memorable time ever for musicals.
