I saw it in London with a replacement cast (w/ Callum Scott Howells as the Emcee) and liked it a lot, though I'd still rank it a notch below Mendes' revival, if only because Mendes' ending ranks as one of the most powerful moments of my theater-going life. My theater companion--who had never seen any Cabaret before--was blown away by this current revival, so clearly the material can still pack a wallop. In London, we had a mezzanine scene, which was perfect.

I was skeptical about the immersive 'pre-show' cabaret acts scattered about the various floors of the theater, and that skepticism turned out to be justified: lobbies and bars just aren't designed to be performing spaces, and even with actors playing saxophones on the bars themselves, it was all rather awkward and confusing, with patrons torn between listening to the acts, getting drinks, finding the restrooms, trying to navigate through gawkers, etc. I'm not sure how much they are going to try to replicate that experience in NYC. All that could be cut.

But I found the actual production to be strong and worth catching. (In terms of design, some *really* wild costumes.)
