I sometimes wonder how closely Van Hove looks at the many sources he adapts. I love Cassavetes' OPENING NIGHT but I wouldn't call it a daring exploration of the human condition. It is a rather pie-eyed homage to the actor as the center of the theatrical universe, as purple a movie as ALL ABOUT EVE or BIRDMAN. |
