One tiny note that doesn't really affect your point: THE BOY FRIEND isn't really a 1920's show. It's a 1950's spoof of 1920's shows. It's interesting that it was revived in the same season as NO NO NANETTE, an actual 1920's show, albeit in a somewhat revised production. I wonder if audiences of the time perceived these productions as essentially the same thing or if the perception was that NO NO NANETTE was the "real thing" and that is why that revival was so much more successful.
