Agreed. Things may have changed, particularly since the quarantine, with so many unexpected outs on short notice. But back in the day (2019?), understudies didn't routinely rehearse until after opening. Notice "routinely." Standbys and intended alternates sometimes got rehearsal room opportunities. But I've had two friends who have made careers of these wonderful jobs, and they were generally expected to learn the show prior to opening sans any full company call.

Didn't this come up when Foster was suddenly out of Music Man? Kathy Voytko? Who received much praise, rather like the Lempicka situation. And then even with Max Clayton going on for Jackman? Foster being replaced by Kathy Voytko happened in a preview, and Voytko had a half-day put in, if memory service. I'm sure I'll be corrected in a matter of minutes.
