Yes, there was a Film Society of Lincoln Center tribute to Davis at Avery Fisher Hall on April 24, 1989. I started to wonder about this last night. And when she came onstage after extensive clips were shown, she said, "What a dump!" Maybe this author is thinking of that but is just very confused about what it was. I agree that it's rather amazingly careless, if not clueless, to make that kind of statement about something that is so easy to check nowadays.

The Town Hall evening with Russell was on September 22, 1974, and then there was a party on the following night.

Springer said he would be doing more of these evenings with Hollywood stars, including some men, but I haven't checked if those did come about.
