The other thing about Mendez and the Tonys, regardless of what one thinks about her absences from the show, is that she's already had a bigger career bump from this show than a Tony win could possibly give her. She's above the title in MERRILY alongside the much better known Jonathan Groff and Daniel Radcliffe, even though her name is probably only known to theatregoers in the tri-state area. The production has treated her as an equally valuable asset as Groff and Radcliffe at every turn, even though I'm pretty sure that's not really the reality of where she is in her career. When next she plays a lead in a Broadway show, it's going to be hard for the producers of that show to argue that she SHOULDN'T be above the title. And I'm not sure that winning a second Tony is going to boost her career more than this production already has.
