These mediocre or worse shows are being overpraised because most of the so-called professional critics who should know better don’t have the guts to tell the truth. They are trying to save their jobs and save what’s left of Broadway by turning a blind eye and deaf ear to what is patently dreck. Boring dreck in many instances. These critics think they are doing the industry and the public a favor by posting “reviews” that gloss over the many serious problems with most of these shows —.problems that should have been fixed in development. Rex Reed, say what you will about him, has been to hundreds of Broadway openings. He called ‘Water for Elephants” the worst show he’d ever seen.
Maybe a bit of exaggeration, but he was far closer to the truth than that positive review the New York Times shamelessly published — a review that was totally divorced from reality.
