Reviews for LEMPICKA were far worse. And also, for what it's worth: significant changes were made after Papermill.

Virtually all the reviews press the point that the show is not as richly layered as the book, or as flavorful. I suppose that comparison is inevitable but it still feels odd. One review even acknowledged this, suggesting that those who haven't read the book will probably enjoy the show.

It looks to me like two specific decisions drove the adaptation: The Gatsby/Daisy romance was to be sincere, and the women characters were to be more emotionally intelligent than in the novel.

From a commercial point of view this may have been sound (sales have been strong), but a major point of the novel is that Gatsby and Daisy are hollow. Narcissists at best, psychopaths at worst, to fill in those voids with sincerity risks nullifying the bitterness which is arguably the book's most memorable quality.

Regardless, I think it will stick around for a while.
