I can't deny what you say (reviews were generally mixed) but from the London reviews I read early on, friends' recommendations and general buzz I'd taken in, not to mention the pedigree of those productions, I expected a lot more from them. And none of the productions were truly awful, there were always some elements to savor. And I'm enough of an Anglophile snob to simply enjoy the theatre-going experience of London. I just hope that won't be changing as it has for me in NYC.

Other than the Orange Tree Uncle Vanya, I probably liked Nachtland best. I haven't seen Appropriate, with which many of Nachtland's naysayers unfavorably compare it. As for Dear Octopus, everything I'd heard about it seemed to insure I'd love it. But other than Lindsay Duncan, I found most of the cast rather inept and unbelievably cast as a family. And I thought all of the set and costume design in that unrelenting monochromatic sea green, was a big misconception.

And concerning the Orange Tree Theatre, I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an easy theatre-going experience outside of London. Richmond is quite accessible by tube or train and the town itself, with its winding streets of shops and cafes and parks and squares on the Thames, provides a fun respite from London.
