| Neither good nor bad, THE HEART OF ROCK AND ROLL is mostly proficient. When it’s not trying to be more than it is (the sunny first half), it’s breezy, if familiar, fun. But then it starts raining cliches and the show falls down. Everyone works ably and hard to drag what’s become a heap of treacle across the finish line, but it’s cheap labor. Still, anyone seeing this show is probably getting what they came for— or enough of it—to be happy. It’s no matter that THE HEART OF ROCK AND ROLL is a rote slide into a fake past. On Broadway, the neon lights are bright, and everyone’s hot for nostalgia. |
