When I think of dismal years, I'd add 1995 when there were only 2 nominees for Best Musical (''Sunset,'' ''Smokey Joe's'') and 2 for Musical Revival.
Or 1985, the year of ''Big River,'' where the Tonys eliminated the categories of Leading Actor AND Actress in a Musical, plus Choreography.
'' ... and a number of years the winner was long closed (looking at you 'Hallelujah, Baby!').''
I believe ''Hallelujah, Baby!'' was the only closed show to win Best Musical. And it shut down in Jan. 1968, a few months BEFORE the Tonys in April 1968. |
